Letter from Clara Immerwahr, to Leopold Anton Johann Sigismund Josef Korsinus Ferdinand Graf Berchtold von und zu Ungarschitz, Frättling und Püllütz, Minister of the Imperial and Royal House and of Foreign Affairs of Austria-Hungary

Your Imperial and Royal Exalted Excellency,

It is with a heavy heart that I must write to you of a terrible scientific malfeasance, perpetrated by none other than my dear spouse. My husband Fritz Haber has used his position at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physical Chemistry to pervert science for the destruction of mankind. He has committed these actions in league with and at the behest of the Ministry of War.

He has taken the mysterious lifeform known as a “unicorn” and weaponized it by doping it with a synthetic combination of salts and acids called Chromioid that, combined with training have enhanced the creature’s barbaric nature. This drug is easy to manufacture and produce, and once the creatures are dosed a few times, the changes in its neural structures become permanently aligned towards fear and violence.

Furthermore, Fritz Haber has perfected a process of developing hydrogen sulphide within the unicorns through enhancing and quickening its metabolism, and feeding it high concentrations of petroleum and other inorganic compounds. Hydrogen sulphide is a toxic gas that occurs on earth in petroleum and inside volcanoes and it is deadly to humans. He created a hollow cavity inside the creatures to contain the gasses and a tube in order to engineer a delivery system for the creature to excrete high concentrations of it (2000 PPM) in short bursts at very close range. Experiments have proven that this will instantaneously kill anything within 25 meters. The internal pressure it causes the creatures also causes them suffering and extreme discomfort until they are able to release the gasses contained in their internal cavity — only to have it quickly fill up again.

Death by hydrogen sulfide may be quick but it is not painless. You may be unaware that developing this heinous weapon required cruel and unethical experiments conducted on living prisoners at the behest of the Ministry of War. These were conducted over my strenuous protests. If anything, they definitively prove that use of poison gas on a larger scale in war would contravene the laws of God and man. Were we to use such methods against our enemies, it would only invite their vengeance and use of even more extreme measures against our soldiers.

I therefore implore you to use your powers to put an end to these experiments before it is too late. Do not deploy unicorns as a weapon of war. Do not allow any further use of the Haber processes for producing aggression in these creatures, nor the unnatural production of toxic gas. Do it in the name of humanity.

K.u.k. Staatspolizei (Imperial and Royal State Police) Order for Arrest: Clara Haber nee Immerwahr

Suspect has been interfering with the war effort. She is to be arrested, interrogated and warned to cease her unpatriotic pacifist activities. Her husband, Fritz Haber’s full attention is needed on chemical weapons development. We cannot allow him to be distracted by domestic issues. If she continues to be an irritant to him or to the Ministry, she is to be assassinated but it must be made to look like an accident or suicide. Intercept her mail and monitor her activities for any sign of espionage. For now, bring her in for questioning and warn her. Haber’s work must remain secret. Determine if she is in league with a subversive network and organization. If so, delay assassination until their sources, members, and organizational structure can be determined.
