I thought the article was equally insightful and funny (and my god, I think it may be the first article I've ever seen on Medium that actually cites sources!). I think the author did a great job, playfully lampooning tropes and stereotypes, but your point is very valid. So long as we're nothing more than "allistics" and "autists" and "MPDG's" we all are reduced to crude stereotypes that place our humanity and ability to connect with each other even further beyond reach. The identity-based cliques, factions and tribes create barriers between people, yet for many folks nowadays it's heretical to point this out because it's taken as an existential threat. The reason why I think we should refuse labels is because people over-identify with them, which not only inflates their sense of self-importance, it deludes people into thinking that they're more unique/special/talented/victimized than they really are. It's a pity that we cannot seem to celebrate and enjoy our differences without placing them on a pedestal. In so doing, we fail to recognize the boring, un-sexy but powerful truth that we have more in common than not.
